Traveljunkieindonesia.com – I have some very exciting postcards to share!

January 2013, we visited Sekaten, Solo, Central Java, to meet one of the few remaining traditional playgrounds.

Sekaten is a celebration by the Javanese community to commemorate the birthday or Maulid of Prophet Muhammad SAW, which has been observed since the propagation of Islam by Walisanga.

Sekaten comes from the word syahadatain or two statements of confession of faith by Muslims in the oneness of Allah SWT and the prophethood of Muhammad.

Apart from a people’s fair selling souvenirs and handicrafts, Sekaten features various traditional perfomances and displays royal heirlooms at the palace.

A gamelan ritual is also held, in which the classic gamelan Kyai Guntur Madu and Kyai Guntur Sari are played from 09.00 to 24.00 in the Grand Mosque Hall.

Oooh Sekaten. We had SO. MUCH. FUN.

I love warm, traditional, summer nights. With friends. And food.
