Name: Ilizna (Liz) Esterhuyse
Travel Blog/website: thetravelliz.com
Twitter: @thetravelliz
Short Bio: After graduating with a Law degree in my home beautiful home country, South Africa, I couldn’t see myself as a lawyer just yet. At the
age of 23 I packed my bags and flew to Asia. My travel blog follows my craving for quirky adventures, unusual design and good coffee.
How did you first get into travel blogging: I travel because it makes me happy. I started blogging, however, because I wanted a platform to share my stories with family who can’t (always) travel with me.
What do you love most about being a travel blogger: Travel blogging opens doors.
What’s the secret to creating a successful travel blog: I work hard, I travel a lot, and I’m always eager to learn more and to improve my skills… but the secret to creating a succesfull travel blog, I fear, is something I’m still trying to figure out.
How do you get your blog noticed amongst the millions of other blogs out there: Social media!
What advice would you give to fledgling travel bloggers: Blogging is a learning process. The more you write, the better you’ll become.
How do you make money out of travel blogging: Advertisements and sponsored reviews bring in some money, but I get more sponsored products and complimentary accomodation/trips than money.
How do you fit in blogging while on the road: I wake up early and write before the sun is ready for a anoter adventure. Also, I only stay in hotels/hostels with free wifi.
What’s your most epic travel story: I had a dinner interview with a young apprentice geisha in Tokyo. It was pretty epic.
What is your favourite destination so far: I love Italy, Japan, and (of course) South Africa!
What’s been your biggest travel disaster: I once took my mother to a sex park on Jeju Island (becuase I thought it would be a normal art expo). Awkward!
What are your top gadgets that you always take travelling: Camera, cellphone, adapters, chargers & earphones!
What’s your favourite phrase in a foreign language: Italian: “Il dolce far niente!” (The sweetness of doing nothing).
Would you ever do any other job: Yes, but only if I can still travel and write.
What’s next on your bucket list: I want to sleep in the world’s most unique hotels, taste Luwak coffee in Indonesia, and travel to 11 countries in 2014.
Favorite travel blog/website(s) – besides Traveljunkieindonesia.com, of course!: I read so many awesome blogs! I love reading adventurouskate.com, legalnomads.com, waegook-tom.com, jettingaround.com, aladyinlondon.com, breathedreamgo.com, crazysexyfuntraveler.com, … and a few hundred more!
What has travel taught you: Traveling has taught me that an adventurous life is always, always possible.
Best travel tip: Stay curious.
